Description

today is october 12th , the National day of my country, Spain xD. And why is that day? because this day, in 1492, Cristobal Colón (Colombus) discovered America. Well, he was't spanish, but the boats, the tripulation and the money was from Spain xDD.

In the drawing you can see:
- A map of Spain
- The Catholic Kings (Fernando and Isabel)
- Cristobal Colon indicating the route
- The two caravels "La Pinta" and "La Niña", with the nao (a type of ship bigger than the caravels) "Santa María".
- And a spanish explorer (i put the face of Spain in APHetalia).

A curiosity:
When i was a child i travel to the south of Spain, at the port where the ships of Columbus departed (Puerto de Palos, Huelva). In there, there are some replicas (at real size) of the boats. I was really impressed because the caravels were veery small! I can't imagine how the sailors can live there during months and months, in the atlantic ocean. They are some photos here, if you are interested: www.eltiempo.com/Multimedia/ga…

Christopher Columbus did not "discover" America per say. A smartass would tell you the natives that live there did, but even if you meant to say that Columbus was the first European to discover America, that would still be incorrect. The discovery of America is credited to Bjarni Herjolfsson, who sighted the North American east coast in 986 AD. It was colonised by the Danes under the command of Lief Erickson in 1003 AD, and was named Vinland, after the abundance of grape vines found there. The earliest attempt to trade with the natives occurred in 1067 AD. The last Precolumbian account of North America was written in 1347 AD. After that, all colonies were abandoned until Columbus settled the continent in 1492 AD.

As for the art, the thing that is kind of wrong with the image is that it does not match the time period. Columbus settled the Americas in 1492 AD, so why is the Spanish soldier carrying a 1785 Naval Flag? He should be carrying the Cross of Burgundy instead. Why is he dressed in a military uniform from the future? The Morion wasn't invented until 1540 AD, and Camisoles with half plate armour was not really a thing until 1600 AD. Columbus's crew would have looked a bit more like this...
